HTML 4 for the World Wide Web: Visual QuickStart Guide

Price Guide: £14.99

Elizabeth Castro John's TOP Recommendation.

Excellent reports on this book are given by Open University students on course T171.

The book covers

  • The latest specifications of HTML 4 set by the World Wide Web Consortium, from the most basic tags that place text, images and links on the page to more complex ones that set up tables, frames or forms.
  • HTML code for creating Web pages, including formatting text, images, links, colours, tables, frames, forms, embedded multimedia clips.
  • Registering with search engines.
  • A chapter on debugging, including browser compatibility issues
  • Cascading Style Sheets.
  • Javascript actions like rollovers, and CGI scripts for use with forms.
  • Clear and concise instructions.
  • Well-captioned illustrations and screenshots that show both the source code and the resulting effect on the Web page.
  • An extremely detailed index.
  • Very useful for both beginner and a good reference book for intermediate users who are already familiar with basic HTML but need help with specific topics.
  • Extensive and useful appendices.
    • A chart that describes each tag (along with its compatibility with Netscape Navigator and/or Internet Explorer.)
    • The code for special symbols.
    • Hexadecimal equivalents for RGB colours.
    • A comparison chart for some of the HTML editors on the market.
  • All the screen shots (of which there are a good number) use Netscape, but this should not cause problems for IE users.

HTML 4 for Dummies

Ed Tittel, Natanya Pitts

Paperback - 416 pages 3rd Ed (October 2000)

Amazon.co.uk Review
Hard-core programmers would say that HTML is for dummies. Nonetheless, those of us who'd like to build and maintain our own Web sites but cringe at the sight of anything resembling a programming language, HTML 4 for Dummies is the hand-holding guide we need to help us through.

Given that so many HTML editors are available that do all of the site-building work for you, it's strange that the authors chose to wait until Appendix C in the back of the book to explain why you need to know HTML. Still, their reasons for learning HTML are sound and the advice they dispense is solid.

Along with going through the ins and outs of HTML tags, the authors do a fine job of explaining what design elements work and how to avoid common mistakes. The section on XHTML ensures that budding site builders have all the latest tools at their disposal.

Whether your goal is to build a simple, text-oriented Web site, or one loaded with frames and graphics and animation, HTML 4 for Dummies will put you on the right track. --John Frederick Moore, amazon.com

Synopsis
This work provides an update to the HTML mark-up standard for amateurs and professional Web designers. It covers HTNL tags and scripting, while also showing how to apply the language to create both simple and complex Web pages.

This book contained a lot of useful information and lots of references (as most Dummies books do.) This book will get you writing HTML painlessly (as it is not hard to learn.) If you buy this book you will learn HTML, end of story. (Obviously, for more advanced features you will need other books.) Great for beginners! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Michael Moncur

Paperback - 397 pages 2nd Ed (31 December, 2000)

JavaScript has become the language no Web developer can do without, mainly because it runs in both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. Sams Teach Yourself JavaScript in 24 Hours explains how to include JavaScript code in Web pages, in order to achieve effects such as rollover buttons, navigation menus, pop-up windows, animated graphics and simple forms. The material is presented in 24 short chapters, each of which concludes with a summary, a quiz and several exercises.

In its fundamentals JavaScript is similar to other programming languages, so early chapters teach essential concepts such as variables, functions, arrays, operators and loops. There is also good coverage of how to control a Web page by programming its DOM (Document Object Model) and responding to events such as button clicks and mouse movements. The author explains that there are incompatibilities between different browsers, and shows how to write code that works in all recent browsers, if necessary by detecting which one is in use. There is also a guide to troubleshooting and handling errors. The most advanced chapters require either Internet Explorer or Netscape 6.0, because of limitations in the DOM presented by Netscape Navigator 4.0. Towards the end, you learn how to create a complete poker game that runs in a browser.

This hands-on guide is ideal for those Web page authors who want to dip a toe into the world of Web scripting. --Tim Anderson
